Winter at Hackfall Wood

Winter at Hackfall Wood

A couple of weeks after the snowfall, much of the woodland was still holding onto its winter coating. Frost lingered beneath the trees, the paths were quiet, and every corner revealed another peaceful scene waiting to be photographed.

One of the highlights of Hackfall is its historic fountain, which has stood at the heart of the woodland for more than two centuries. On this visit, the surrounding pond had frozen completely, creating a beautiful winter scene. Sheets of ice stretched across the water, reflecting the pale winter light and adding to the sense of stillness that filled the valley.

Scattered throughout the woodland are a number of follies. The elegant Rustic Temple stands overlooking the water, while the restored Grotto and the Banqueting House offer glimpses into Hackfall's history. Higher on the hillside, Mowbray Castle appears among the trees.
