Exploring Tantallon Castle
During our trip to North Berwick, we visited Tantallon Castle and explored the ruins of the 14th-century fortress overlooking the North Sea. Bass Rock can be seen in the distance out in the water, looking almost snow-covered. It's not snow, though. It's gannets. Thousands of them are nesting on the rock, and the castle is a great place to watch as they circle and dive into the sea.
You can wander through the ruins, climb narrow staircases to the very top, and peek through arrow slits that frame the ocean. Down below, the sea crashes against the cliffs, and every few seconds you spot another gannet diving at full speed. They’re fascinating to watch, and I could’ve stood there for hours.
