Rosedale
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Rosedale was at the centre of the ironstone mining industry. Mining began here in 1857, transforming the valley as iron ore was extracted from beneath the surrounding moors. The industry brought railways, workers and new buildings to what had previously been a quiet rural landscape.
Some of the old kilns can still be seen today, standing among the countryside as reminders of that industrial past. With the moors stretching beyond them, they create an interesting contrast between the natural landscape and the industry that once shaped it. The mines eventually closed in 1929, and today, the old industrial remains sit quietly on the moors.
